Lowry, Director of The Museum of Modern Art, today revealed the completed renovation of the east end of the Museums campus and unveiled the full design of a multi-year expansion project, developed by MoMA with architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler. The goals for the project are threefold: to increase gallery space and allow the Museum to exhibit significantly more of its diverse collection in deeper and more interdisciplinary ways, to provide visitors with a more welcoming and comfortable experience, and to better connect the Museum to the urban fabric of midtown Manhattan. The renovation of the east section, which began in February 2016 and is now complete, enhances galleries and public spaces on three floors. For Ai Weiwei, Trump a 'brand' for global trend toward hate | | Unique Malevich drawing discovered during Stedelijk inventory of the Khardzhiev Collection | | Heritage Auctions staff aids in recovering stolen coins | Chinese artist Ai Weiwei walks at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem on the eve of the opening of his new exhibition "Maybe, Maybe Not" at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem on June 1, 2017. THOMAS COEX / AFP. JERUSALEM (AFP).- Ai Weiwei said Thursday he sees US President Donald Trump as the "brand" for a global trend toward hatred and division, as the Chinese artist prepared to open a politically charged exhibition in Jerusalem. In an interview with AFP, Ai also expressed his passion for the cause of refugees and his criticism of his home country -- where he currently cannot return. At the same time, he spoke of the decision artists such as himself face when deciding to exhibit or perform in Israel due to calls for a boycott over the country's occupation of Palestinian territory. For Ai, who has visited the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip, where he filmed a piece included in the exhibition, being absent from the argument is not an option. "My voice should be heard," he said at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, where his exhibition ... More | | Kazimir Malevich, An Englishman in Moscow, 1914, oil on canvas, 88x57cm. Collection Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. AMSTERDAM.- The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, custodian of the largest Kazimir Malevich collection outside the Russian Federation, has made an exciting discovery. A Malevich drawing came to light during an inventory of the Khardzhiev Collection at the Stedelijk. The find is a previously unknown preliminary drawing for Malevichs iconic painting An Englishman in Moscow (1914), one of the highlights of the Stedelijk collection. The Khardzhiev Collection is composed of a collection of Russian avant-garde art and the art historical library of the Russian literary scholar Nikolai Khardzhiev (1903-1996), and has been housed at the Stedelijk since 1998. In 2013-14 the bulk of the collection was the subject of a major Malevich retrospective at the Stedelijk, Tate Modern and Kunsthalle Bonn. Over the last twenty years, the Stedelijk has conducted extensive research into ... More | | Bill Walker identifies two instances of how stolen coins found their way back on the market. DALLAS, TX.- Quick thinking on the part of a Heritage Auctions staff member led to the discovery of two high-value coins re-entering the marketplace. In January 2017 Bill Walker, a rare coin specialist in Heritage Auctions' Dallas office, was approached by a Florida coin dealer seeking to auction five rare coins. Walker began researching the coins and noticed that they all had been offered and sold in the firms' Florida United Numismatics (FUN) Auction in 2016. The winner purchased seven coins and the Florida dealer was offering five from the purchase. Realizing that the coins likely did not belong to the same person who successfully won the coins in the auction, Walker delved even further into the matter. Curiously, the dealer was being offered the coins for less than the recent auction records. Walker called contacts in the hobby and then the winning bidder to learn if the coins had been sold following the auction. As expected, ... More |

Salvador Dali's Jesus on offer at Bonhams Impressionist and Modern Art Sale | | Noose found at African American museum in Washington | | Sotheby's to offer the only version of one of the most iconic works by Rossetti to remain in private hands | Salvador Dalà (1904-1989), Coeur-Sacré de Jésus (Painted in 1962). Estimate: £800,000-1,200,000. Photo: Bonhams. LONDON.- Salvador Dalis 1962 painting Coeur-Sacré de Jésus is offered at Bonhams Impressionist and Modern Art Sale, 22 June at Bonhams New Bond Street, London. Coeur-Sacré de Jésus is estimated at £800,000-1,200,000. Modelled with thoughtful academic technique, Coeur-Sacré de Jésus is an exceptional example of Dalis work from the period following his return to religion and classicism. The prevailing influence of the Renaissance Masters on Dalis Christ is evident, particularly that of Francisco de Zurbarán, whose realistic paintings of monks, nuns and martyrs featured strong contrasts in illumination. The oil on canvas offers an insight into Dalis personal beliefs at the time. Dalis spiritual awakening, which was derided by the Surrealists with whom he had been closely associated in the 1920s and 30s, ... WASHINGTON (AFP).- Police in the US capital on Thursday were investigating the discovery of a noose in an exhibit on racial segregation at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The grim find on Wednesday of the looped rope -- seen as a symbol of the lynchings of black men in the American South in the 19th and 20th centuries -- at the museum, not far from the White House, sparked universal condemnation. Museum director Lonnie Bunch called the incident "a painful reminder of the challenges that African Americans continue to face." "This was a horrible act," he said, "but a stark reminder of why our work is so important." The museum gallery where the noose was found was closed for nearly three hours until police could rule out any threat to visitors. ... More | | Lady Lilith celebrates the beauty of the artists first mistress, Fanny Cornforth. Courtesy Sothebys. LONDON.- In July this year, Sothebys will offer the only version of one of the most iconic works by Dante Gabriel Rossetti to remain in private hands. A celebration of the beauty of the artists first mistress, Fanny Cornforth, and a pictorial hymn to her glorious corn-gold hair, Lady Lilith comes to auction for the first time in thirty years. The work was painted during Rossettis most innovative period in the 1860s, when he created the cult of the Pre-Raphaelite beauty, or Stunner as he called them, whose physical qualities were embodied by Fanny Cornforth. Two other paintings of Lady Lilith were produced by Rossetti during this decade and they now hang in museums in the US. The rediscovered picture will be offered at Sothebys London sale of Victorian, Pre-Raphaelite & British Impressionist Art on 13 July with an estimate of £400,000-600,000. NEW YORK (AFP).- A guitar of Grateful Dead legend Jerry Garcia on Wednesday raised more than $3 million at an auction to support a leading civil rights group. Known as Wolf, the custom-made electric guitar was a constant concert companion of Garcia until the jam rock icon died in 1995. The original buyer put the guitar back on auction to raise money for the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Alabama-based group which wages legal battles against white supremacists and other hate groups. At a charity concert in New York, Brian Halligan, the CEO and co-founder of marketing firm HubSpot, bought Wolf for $1.932 million including the premium. An anonymous charity matched his pre-premium $1.6 million bid, bringing the total donation for the Southern Poverty Law Center to $3.2 million. NEW YORK.- The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper" album revolutionized not just music but cover art, enigmatically depicting 61 (mostly) famous people. Fifty years later, only five of them are still alive. At a time when album covers were usually glossy photos of artists, "Sgt. The 1967 album showed The Beatles dressed up as a military brass band surrounded by sketches, photos or wax figures of 57 people from writers to Indian gurus to Karl Marx. Adding to the interactive aspect, the album came with cut-outs including paper mustaches that listeners could paste onto the cover. More Ding Yi's first solo exhibition in London on view at Timothy Taylor LONDON.- Timothy Taylor announced Ding Yis first solo exhibition in London. Continuing his ongoing investigation, Appearance of Crosses, this show presents seven never-before seen paintings. As one of todays preeminent Chinese contemporary artists Ding Yis work employs a distinctive language of mark- making to examine the function of abstract painting both as a personal form of expression and meditation, as well as a channel through which to consider the rapid socio-political developments of 20th century China. The seven paintings on show form part of a recently defined new body of work. The series is characterised by an intuitive development in the artists practice - the creation of a sensitive and reactive relationship between woodcut and painting. Borne out of Ding Yis rigorous investigation of materiality, this distinctive new technique allows the artist to imbue ... More Exhibition reflects on the role of women artists in the development of Egyptian Modern art DUBAI.- Green Art Gallery is presenting Modernist Women of Egypt, an exhibition that reflects on the role of women artists in the development of Egyptian Modern art. The exhibition looks at how Egypts unique engagement in the early 20th century with issues of nationalism, womanhood, activism, traditions and multiculturalism produced a substantial environment for women artists to develop. Modernist Women of Egypt focuses on the period between the 1950s and early 1970s featuring works by artists Inji Efflatoun, Vessela Farid, Tahia Halim, Zeinab Abdel Hamid, Effat Naghi, Marguerite Nakhla, Gazbia Sirry, and Margo Veillon. More The Musée de l'Elysée opens one of the first exhibitions devoted to the history of the slide LAUSANNE.- The Musée de lElysée presents one of the first exhibitions devoted to the history of the slide, from its inception in the second half of the 19th century to today. Whereas the history of photography was built around the photographic print, the photographic projection underwent a major development as of the last third of the 19th century, borrowing from the tradition of magic lantern shows. For a long time confined to the realm of teaching, public lectures and popular entertainment, photographic projection also became increasingly popular among amateur photographers. Some well-known professional photographers already used the slide in the first half of the 20th century, but it wasnt until the decade from 1960-1970 that this type of presentation really took hold within the artistic community when conceptual artists adopted it as an alternative means ... With a selection of more than twenty-five paintings and bronze sculptures, this exhibition explores an important period in Kirkebys oeuvre, one which has not previously been shown in such depth. The foundational importance of the natural sciences to Kirkebys painting is well established: the artist traveled extensively in the Arctic and Greenland in the early 1960s while working towards his masters degree in geology. Equally important to his development as a painter are the many experiments with architecture and performance Kirkeby carried out during his student days and into the 1970s.
