MILAN.- Pirelli HangarBicocca presents a retrospective of the work of Belgian artist Ann Veronica Janssens, one of the worlds foremost artists. Throughout her 40-year career, Janssens has continued to experiment with light, her primary material. She has investigated the sensory and performative nature of space and architecture, creating works that are mutable and ephemeral. Emerging from her research, the artist's interventions are set on the border between art and science, and investigate the limits of human perception and psyche, as well as the aleatory connotations of natural phenomena, down to their minimum scale. SEATTLE, WA.- Today the Seattle Art Museum announced a gift of 48 major works by Alexander Calder to the museum from the collection of Jon and Kim Shirley. The gift of the Shirley Family Calder Collection is supported by a $10 million endowment and an annual financial commitment from the Shirleys to support Calder-related exhibitions and research. The Shirleys collection is one of the most important collections of Calders work in private hands. The Shirleys gift to SAM will be the centerpiece of an ongoing series of annual exhibitions and programs. PARIS.- Le Trait de Lumière painted in 1959 by Jane Graverol achieved 579,975 a new auction world record for the artist at Bonhams' La Révolution Surréaliste / Surrealist Sale today (Wednesday 29 March) in Paris. The work had a pre-sale estimate of 35,000 - 55,000 and was one of the highlights of the sale. A second painting by Jane Graverol entitled Hommage à Papin has been sold for 147,795 for an estimate of 35,000 to 55,000. The 199-lot sale made a total of 2,731,865 with 66% sold by lot and 93% sold by value. LONDON.- Members of the Surrealist group would often play a game. It involved participants drawing or writing on a piece of paper before folding it and passing it on to the next person, who would add their addition without seeing the formers work, and then, in turn, pass it on to the next player. It was called Cadavre Exquis (or Exquisite Corpse), and it was a practice that would progress into a form of collaborative painting, with one canvas featuring contributions from multiple artists. The Liberty Head design Double Eagle ($20 denomination U.S. gold coin) is one of the finest known surviving examples of its kind struck in 1861 at the San Francisco Mint. DNA confirms oral history of Swahili people
NEW YORK, NY.- A long history of mercantile trade along the eastern shores of Africa left its mark on the DNA of ancient Swahili people. A new analysis of centuries-old bones and teeth collected from six burial sites across coastal Kenya and Tanzania has found that, around 1,000 years ago, local African women began having children with Persian traders and that their descendants gained power and status in the highest levels of pre-colonial Swahili society. The findings help elucidate the foundations of Swahili civilization, and suggest that long-told origin stories, passed down through generations of Swahili families, may be more truthful than many outsiders have presumed. In the 1600s, no less a literary luminary than John Dryden denounced lowbrow verbal amusements that torture one poor word ten thousand ways. You may know how that one poor word feels after seeing Shucked, the anomalous Broadway musical about corn that opened Tuesday at the Nederlander Theater. For more than two hours, it pelts you with piffle so egregious not just puns but also dad jokes, double entendres and booby-trapped one-liners that, forced into submission, you eventually give in. NEW YORK, NY.- While on hiatus last spring from his job as a writer and director for Late Night With Seth Meyers, Mike Karnell went to Mercanteinfiera, a trade fair in Parma, Italy, where he had one mission: Find the lamps. There, he met an older Italian vendor who invited Karnell to visit his warehouses in Milan. I thought to myself: In the future, I want to be a fragile old man selling fragile old lamps. How do I work backwards from there? Karnell, 35, said. About a year later, Karnell found a path. In February, he opened FloraLuce, a shop in New York City that specializes in vintage lamps and lighting fixtures. The lamps, which include some he purchased during his expedition in Milan, are primarily from Italy, were made between the 1930s and the 1980s, he said, and range in price from $500 to $4,000.
