Ben Bauer, Belwin Memory 1 (detail). Oil on aluminum, 6 x 6 inches. NEW YORK, NY.- Today, perhaps more than ever, as many of us are limiting our exposure to the outdoors, we can reflect and consider our relationship with nature as the old adage goes, absence makes the heart grow fonder. On May 18th, 2020, Rehs Contemporary opened a digital exhibition of work by tonalist landscape painter Ben Bauer, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting Belwin Conservancy in Minnesota. A love for the outdoors was instilled in Bauer from a young age. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, he grew up in a family that enjoyed weekends in the countryside, giving him an intimate perspective of the changing of seasons; a gradual unfolding of tonal shifts over time. His experiences in those formative years were greatly influential in addition to his family experience, school trips to places like Belwin Conservancy were significant ... More |

Estimate: 8,000-10,000 / US$ 8,800- 11,000. MUNICH.- What they have in common are significant provenances and fascinating background stories. Additionally, the two works by Lovis Corinth and Max Liebermann are prime examples of proper handling of looted art. Now both works will be offered in the 500th Anniversary Auction at Ketterer Kunst in Munich on July 17/18, 2020. Lovis Corinths Tiroler Bauernstube has a provenance that includes two important Jewish collectors: the Berlin architect Leo Nachtlicht and the textile manufacturer Robert Graetz. The latter acquired the oil painting in 1932, a year before the Nazis seized power, from his friend Leo Nachtlicht who was in dire straits as a consequence of the global economic crisis. | French screen legend Michel Piccoli dead at 94 | | The Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg exhibits Japanese paintings and prints | | The 17th International Architecture Exhibition postponed to 2021 | Michel Piccoli, one of the most original and versatile French actors of the last half century, has died aged 94, his family said on May 18, 2020. FRANCOIS GUILLOT / AFP. PARIS (AFP).- Michel Piccoli, one of the most original and versatile French actors of the last half century, has died aged 94, his family said Monday. He died "in the arms of his wife Ludivine and his children Inord and Missia after a stroke", the family told AFP. Piccoli -- who passed on May 12 -- starred in a string of classics which redefined world cinema, from Luis Bunuel's "Belle de Jour" and "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie" to a typically memorable turn opposite Brigitte Bardot in Jean-Luc Godard's "Contempt" in 1963. Bardot said that though she and the left-wing Piccoli were polar opposites politically, they shared great "mutual esteem". "He had humour and talent," she told AFP. "And he liked my backside," she added cryptically. A masterful performer with a wickedly malicious edge, Piccoli managed to carve out a hugely prolific career as both an arthouse ico ... HAMBURG.- In Japanese culture, repetition and copying are regarded as the basis for artistic creation. Far removed from the paradigm of originality in European modernism, in Japanese art imitation and duplication are a matter of course. These acts are understood as paying homage to early masters and are openly practiced as age-old pictorial traditions. The Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg is fortunate to have an outstanding collection of Japanese painting and prints, which allows viewers to peer over the shoulders of these artists. In the exhibition Copy & Paste. Repetition in Japanese Imagery, about 100 sketches, color woodcuts, hanging scrolls, books and folding screens from the East Asian Collection provide insights into the foundations of Japanese visual culture in the late Edo (16031868) and Meiji (18681912) periods. Based on these works, the show ... More | | The French pavilion at the Venice Biennale in Venice, Italy, May 25, 2019. Luckily, Im used to contorting my body into small spaces, she said from the ship where she has been grounded since her show shut down in March. More New book offers majestic, dynamic and dense drawings on the theme of origins from Jim Dine. NEW YORK, NY.- This book presents for the first time Jim Dine's Secret Drawings, a series of 45 majestic, dynamic and dense drawings made between 2012 and 2018 in his studios in Walla Walla, Washington, and Paris. Ranging in size from 50 x 70 to 104 x 152 cm, these works are the product of Dines intense, restless processes of application, erasure and most importantly re-working, using materials as diverse as charcoal, China ink, pastel, fixative, oil enamel and acrylic paints, as well as collage. The textures of the paperswhat I had on the floor and lying aroundvary greatly, as do Dines tools, from sticks, brushes, knives, rotary grinders and the artists bare hands. The resulting drawings are raw, explosive, caught in the process of becoming, abstract yet with hints of familiar forms, perhaps a rectangle, oval, a slice or an aperture. For Dine himself, these drawings ult ... However, their work is united by their dedication to the material and their creative intensity, which is most clearly expressed in their fanaticism for their chosen media and techniques. The fields of painting and photography both endow their practitioners with numerous guidelines for the correct ways of behaviour and choice of material. For the painter, let the canvas be linen and the paint be oil. Analogue ...
