VIENNA.- The Kunsthistorisches Museums Coin Collection holds both the largest and by far the most important collection of coins minted under Maria Theresa; it is the best place, and now is the best time, to host an exhibition that presents the monarchs life in medals to celebrate what would have been her 300th birthday. It presents her in the company of her large family, running the gamut of events from dynastic marriages to heart-breaking calamities. It showcases her role as a ruler forced to fight several wars for her inheritance and, together with her son and co-regent Joseph II, as a pioneering social reformer. The artefacts on show also illustrate the extent of Maria Theresas realm, which ... More |

Major exhibition on the British artist John Minton on view at Pallant House Gallery | | Exhibition is first to offer a view of the various ideals of women in Indian painting | | "Art Out of the Bloodlands: A Century of Polish Artists in Britain" on view at Ben Uri Gallery & Museum | John Minton, Portrait of David Tindle as a Boy, c.1952, oil on canvas, Pallant House Gallery (Hussey Bequest, Chichester District Council, 1985) © Royal College of Art. CHICHESTER.- This summer Pallant House Gallery presents a major exhibition on the British artist John Minton (1917 1957), marking the centenary of his birth and 60 years since his death. It explores the artists achievements far beyond his reputation as a leading illustrator and influential teacher, spanning: Evocative wartime landscapes, including views of London, rooting him firmly in the Neo-Romantic tradition. Exotic subject matter in a new colour palette inspired by travel to Corsica, Jamaica, and Spain, including the newly rediscovered Jamaican Village (1951) (see above). Figurative work including portraits of young male students and friends that express something of Mintons experience as a leading gay artist in the 1940s and 1950s. These have added poignancy as 2017 marks 50 years since the decriminalisation of male homosexuality in England and Wales. Book illustrations, pos ... ZURICH.- Indian miniatures are like windows onto dreamlike, idealised worlds. The pictures have a broad spectrum of themes ranging from religious and mythological subjects through literary, poetic motifs to secular, courtly scenes. The exhibition at Museum Rietberg is the first to offer a view of the various ideals of women in Indian painting. Images of women play a key role in many genres of Indian painting. In keeping with the perfectly crafted forms of expression in Indian miniatures, the female figures in the works on display have the character of ideal, aesthetically flawless visions. Reflecting artistic standards, they go beyond the representation of real persons and should not be regarded as portraits of existing women like those who lived at court. Rather, the images depict multifaceted beauties reminiscent of the lyrical descriptions of classical Indian poets like Jayadeva and Kalidasa, who compared the female ... LONDON.- Ben Uri is presenting the second exhibition in its series on refugee and migrant artists, highlighting the Polish contribution in Britain over the last century. This focus is particularly apt as the community approaches its millionth citizen, the largest migrant group in Britain, and as Poland celebrates a century since it regained its independence as a nation state after 123 years. The exhibition tells aspects of the story of the Polish community in Britain, and Poland's recent turbulent history, through the lens of art. It traces the complex stories of Polish-born artists who fled successive regimes, were variously persecuted, imprisoned and interned, crossed continents or, today, have made positive choices to come to Britain to study or to develop professionally. The exhibition brings together a century of artworks and archival material by both celebrated and lesser-known Polish-born artists selected from the Ben Uri Col ... More |

LEEDS.- Harewood House Trust is exhibiting 63 works on paper by the Caribbean artist Frank Walter (1926-2009). These works have never been seen together in England before. The majority are landscapes, including many of trees purposely selected to resonate with Harewoods Capability Brown landscape. Apparently simple, they beautifully depict real and imaginary vistas which speak with an unmistakable visionary voice. Frank Walter (Francis Archibald Wentworth Walter), self-styled 7th Prince of the West Indies, Lord of Follies and the Ding-a-Ding Nook, was born in Antigua in 1926. Walter was hugely talented as an artist and writer, although somewhat flawed by an obsession with his ancestral lineage which he believed linked him with the aristocratic families of Europe ... Currently, his work is being rediscovered by a younger generation of artists and curators. Following its opening at Tate Liverpool, the first retrospective of one of Eastern Europes most significant artists is now on view at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. The exhibition examines his entire oeuvre, from the sculptures of the early 1960s, constructed using found materials, to his later installations, and emphasizes his experimental approach to making objects, spatial installations, and exhibitions. Inspired by prewar avant-garde movements such as Polish Constructivism, Krasińskis work combines a wry sense of humor and a fascination with chance. The retrospective features over fifty works, including suspended objects and wire sculptures, that testify to his interest in sculpture as line. In 1968 he introdu ... | href=' Flashback On a day like today, Italian painter Francesco Albani was born August 16, 1578. Francesco Albani or Albano (17 March or 17 August 1578 - 4 October 1660) was an Italian Baroque painter. Albani never acquired the monumentality or tenebrism that was quaking the contemporary world of painters, and in fact, is derided often for his lyric, cherubim-filled sweetness, which often has not yet shaken the mannerist elegance. While Albani's thematic would have appealed to Poussin, he lacked the Frenchman's muscular drama. His style sometimes appears to befit the decorative Rococo more than of his time.
