The website of Winners auction house describes five signed letters written in English between 1951 and 1954. The site gave current estimates of their combined value as between $31,000 and $46,000. In a 1951 letter to eminent physicist David Bohm, Einstein discusses Bohm's linkage between quantum theory and "relativistic field theory". "I must confess that I am not able to guess how such unification could be achieved," Einstein writes. The typed letter includes an equation added in neat handwriting and the writer's signature. Giovanni da Rimini: A 14th-century masterpiece unveiled at the National Gallery | | Frederik Bruun Rasmussen sets world auction record for Russian icons | | VOLTA Basel opens most mature edition with 70 galleries | Giovanni da Rimini, Virgin and Child with Five Saints. Probably about 1300-05. Egg tempera on panel, 49 à 39 cm. Pinacoteca Comunale di Faenza © IBACN / Emilia-Romagna. LONDON.- This summer visitors to the National Gallery can discover Giovanni da Riminis exquisite late Medieval painting, Scenes from the Lives of the Virgin and Other Saints. Giovannis panel, which is more than seven hundred years old, beautifully unites the tradition of late Byzantine icons with a new, more sophisticated style of painting, rich in narrative detail. Thanks to the generous donation of the New York collector and philanthropist Ronald S. Lauder, the work was acquired by the National Gallery in 2015. The panel will reside with Mr Lauder during his lifetime but will be on display at regular intervals at the National Gallery beginning with this exhibition. The exhibition brings together, for the first time in the UK, the three easel paintings unanimously attributed to Giovanni da Rimini: 'Scenes from the Lives of the Virgin and Other Saints' with the very closely related 'Scenes from the Life of Christ' from ... More | | The Novgorod School, 16th century: Large Russian church icon with a depiction of the Descent from the Cross. Hammer price: DKK 4.6 million ( 620,000 / 806,000 including buyer's premium). COPENHAGEN.- This summer's international auction at Bruun Rasmussen in Copenhagen has just ended with an iconic auction of Russian art. With a world record on Russian icons and a total hammer price of DKK 27.6 million ( 3.7 million / 4.8 million including buyer's premium), auction history was made on Friday 9th June. We are completely overwhelmed by the major international interest shown in the art treasures at last Fridays auction. The Russian icons from Zeiner-Henriksens collection were a particular surprise, with several impressive million-kroner hammer prices. A church icon from the 16th century of Christ being taken down from the cross was sold for DKK 4.6 million ( 620,000 / 806,000 including buyer's premium), which is a World auction record, says Martin Hans Borg, expert on Russian art at Bruun Rasmussen. The auctions main attraction was without a doubt Norwegian business ... More | | Zavier Ellis (center, owner of Charlie Smith London) confers with a collector. A new Tom Butler painting, part of the gallerys Interiority curated booth, looks on. BASEL.- Within the current global society of stress and strife, the possibility of art as means of social change, of balm to misunderstanding and beacon for the marginalized, is a very real and powerful thing. Assembled under Markthalles cupola dome was perhaps the most mature VOLTA Basel edition yet, with 70 galleries assembling their international artist retinue, many of whom harnessed the challenge to inform and educate as seriously as to soothe and complement. The bustling preview crowd answered with concerted attendance, thoughtful dialogue, and many sales. At thirteen we are not fully-fledged adults yet, and VOLTA was always intended to be a contrast to the hyper-bustle, well-heeled, blue-chip offerings across town, noted Amanda Coulson, VOLTAs Artistic Director. So while we have reached a level of polish expected with the longevity of our presence here, nonetheless we still maintain the air of surprise ... More |

GREENWICH, CONN.- The Bruce Museum opened Spring into Summer with Andy Warhol and Friends! The new exhibition takes an unusual approach to this most famous of Pop artists. Although we tend to associate Warhols work with artifice and mass productionthink of his bold images of Marilyn Monroe and Campbells Soup cansthere is another side to the artist that is often overlooked, his interest in the natural, the real, and the intimate, says Kenneth E. Silver, New York University Professor of Modern Art and Bruce Museum Adjunct Curator of Art. Nederlands Fotomuseum Rotterdam. © Ed van der Elsken / Ed van der Elsken Estate. PARIS.- Ed van der Elsken (1925-1990) is a unique figure in Dutch 20th-century documentary cinema and photography. As a photographer, his preferred subject was the street, and in cities like Paris, Amsterdam, Hong Kong or Tokyo, he enjoyed hunting for subjects. Often qualified as a photographer of marginal figures, he sought in reality an aesthetic form, a visual authenticity, devoid of artifice, a beauty that was sometimes openly sensual, at times even erotic. Ed van der Elsken was fascinated by these proud figures, full of life and vitality. The exhibition at the Jeu de Paume presents a large selection of some of his most iconic images: shots of Paris from the 1950s, figures photographed on his numerous travels or in his native Amsterdam from the 1960s onwards, as well as his books, and excerpts from his films and slide shows, particularly Eye Love You and Tokyo Symphony. Bringing ancient tapestries back to life in Belgium | | Mitchell-Innes & Nash announces representation of The Estate of General Idea | | Moretti Fine Art opens a new gallery space in Monte Carlo | Restored tapestries are displayed at the Royal Manufacturers De Wit in Mechelen. JOHN THYS / AFP. MECHELEN (AFP).- The painstaking job of restoring some of the world's finest ancient tapestries, stitch by stitch, is not for the highly strung or restless. Returning to its former glory the kind of creation that adorns a cathedral wall or is displayed at a world-renowned museum can take more than a year for tapestry restorers at Royal Manufacturers De Wit. Tucked away in an elegant medieval monks' residence in Belgium, head restorer Veerle De Wachter and her white-coated, all-female team of 15 labour away with needle and thread, adding thousands of stitches to a single piece. "Someone who is nervous or excitable would never manage it," she tells AFP, seated in front of a vast wall stacked with bundles of thread, a colourful reminder of the days when the company produced its own tapestries. The work calls for a demanding degree of focus, knowledge of fabrics and ... More | | General Idea, AIDS, 1987. Serigraph on paper. From General Ideas Imagevirus project, 1987-1994. The gallerys first exhibition with the Estate of General Idea will be in November 2017 and will feature the groups Ziggurat Paintings (1968-86), marking General Ideas first solo exhibition in New York since The Museum of Modern Art presented One Day of AZT / One Year of AZT in 1996. This exhibition offers an original deconstruction of the history of seeing, bringing together history, the history of art, of cinema, of theatre and performance, of popular entertainment and circuses, and the history of science and technology. Balzac called the diorama the marvel of the century. (2) Its invention in the 19th century indeed brought about an optical revolution and represented a turning point in the history of spectacle akin to the emergence of magic lanterns in the 17th century. The exhibition explores three of the most important origins of the diorama. The first is Louis Daguerres original 1822 diorama, a large format painting animated by ingenious lighting tricks, as well as two types which ... More Skulptur Projekte 2017 opens in Münster MÃNSTER.- The history of the Skulptur Projekte is closely linked to the idea of creating a public not only with but also for art. The exhibition thus differs from many projects in the public space since the late 1990s where the focus has been on issues of social and economic urban development. The Skulptur Projekte were initiated in 1977 by Klaus BuÃmann, at the time the custodian and later the director of the Westfälisches Landesmuseum, and Kasper König, who since that time has held the position of chief curator for every edition of the exhibition in teams of changing constellations. A public controversy over George Rickeys kinetic sculpture Drei rotierende Quadrate / Three Squares Gyratory, erected in Münster in 1975, preceded the first Skulptur Projekte. In deliberate contrast to the voices in town that had loudly demonized Rickeys aesthetic postulation, the Skulptur ...
