| Fact: Coronavirus + Diabetes = Increased Risk of Death
For the U.S. population, getting the COVID-19 virus and having diabetes increases the risk of death dramatically. The Louisiana Department of Health released a report showing that of those that have died from COVID-19, 40% of the total had diabetes. In the U.S., those with diabetes and the COVID-19 virus have a 9.2% risk for death and those with cardiovascular disease 10 .5%. If you can reduce the A1c below the A1c diagnosis of 6.5% and even below the diagnosis for prediabetes at 5.7-6.4%, you can reduce the risk to a level closer to those with no reported underlying medical conditions, which is 0.9%.
