To kick off the highlights…our Modern and Contemporary Art Auction ended Sunday 7th May and in keeping with the celebration of 'Britishness', the top spots of the auction were all taken by British artists!
The leading artist of the sale was the ever popular, Donald McIntyre RCA (1923-2009). Lot 3 ‘Rocky Coast’ sold for £4,500, Lot 38 ‘Cottage on the Rocks’ sold for £4,200, Lot 39 ‘Port en Caple’ sold for £1,600.
There was fierce competition over a large single-owner collection of artworks by Manchester artist Arthur Cyril Hilton (1897-1960), which achieved in excess of £9,000 (+fees). Bidders were still battling over his works over an hour after the auction was scheduled to finish. The highlight of the collection was lot 64- containing the artist’s folio of sketches along with exhibition journals and photographs which soared over its £300-£500 estimate to sell for a hammer price of £2,650, an auction record for the artist. |
