Temperatures in San Antonio peaked at 100 degrees Monday. The grim scene was discovered around 6 p.m. by a local worker who heard cries for help. He found the trailer door partially open and could make out piles of bodies inside. The truck had been abandoned in a remote area near auto salvage yards and railway tracks. “These deaths are on Biden,” tweeted Republican Gov. | | ‘Abominable’ | Russian Missile Strike on Crowded Ukrainian Shopping Mall Kills 18Addressing the nation last night, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the incident in the city of Kremenchuk “one of the most defiant terrorist attacks in European history,” adding that “the Russian state has become the largest terrorist organization in the world.” The targeted attack on “an ordinary shopping mall with women, children, ordinary civilians inside” wounded another 59 people. G-7 leaders, meeting in Germany to discuss further sanctions on Moscow, released a statement saying, “Indiscriminate attacks on innocent civilians constitute a war crime.” The U.N. | | Trigger Malfunction | Judges Block Statewide Abortion Bans in Louisiana, Utah The battleground shifted to state courts Monday after the Supreme Court overturned the judgment that had guaranteed the constitutional right to abortion since 1973. District judges in Louisiana and Utah issued temporary restraining orders on those states implementing their anti-abortion trigger laws. Clinics in Idaho, Kentucky, Mississippi and Texas filed suits seeking similar relief. One of Louisiana’s three abortion clinics confirmed it would resume performing procedures this morning. “We’re going to do what we can,” said Kathaleen Pittman of Shreveport’s Hope Medical Group for Women. “It could all come to a screeching halt.” Anti-abortion activists have engaged lawyers to ensure it does. | | Toxic Leak | Poisonous Gas Tank Explosion Kills at Least 13 in Jordanian PortA video posted to Twitter showed a tank crashing onto the deck of a ship after falling from a winch. Plumes of bright yellow gas rose into the air as people fled the scene. The gas has been identified as chlorine, a chemical frequently used in cleaning products. When inhaled it reacts with water in the body to produce dangerous acids, typically causing fluid to build up in the lungs. | | Mr. Happy Face | Chihuahua Mix With a Mohawk Wins World’s Ugliest Dog Contest Before their meeting at an Arizona dog shelter last year, staff warned Jeneda Banelly that Mr. Happy Face “could be inbred because he was so ugly.” They also said the 17-year-old pooch’s multiple tumors meant he might only have weeks or months left. But “when I first met him, he was the happiest creature that I had ever met,” said Banelly. “He hobbled up to me and chose me.” Now, 10 months later, he’s been crowned World’s Ugliest Dog at a California contest that promotes animal adoption. “It was clear and obvious Mr. Happy Face deserved to be champion,” said judge Debra Mathy. So when he heard Westren’s flat was being cleared last week, he rushed to investigate. To his horror, he saw hundreds of Westren’s artworks being bundled into bags. The Supreme Court ruled Monday that high school football coach Joseph Kennedy had a constitutional right to pray on the field after games. The vote was split along familiar lines, 6-3. In his majority judgment Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote that “respect for religious expressions is indispensable to life in a free and diverse republic.” Justice Sonia Sotomayor, dissenting, accused her colleagues of setting America “down a perilous path in forcing states to entangle themselves with religion, with all of our rights hanging in the balance.” Last week the court ruled religious schools couldn’t be excluded from a tuition program.
