That cloudy summer day, he joined my husband Spence, daughter Ellen, and me halfway to the bridge across Deer Creek. I’d lured Ellen, on break from her epidemiology doctoral studies, out for a walk with the chance of meeting our neighborhood friendly Beagle. Spot sniffed chicory, crown vetch, and tree trunks on both sides of the road. Every forty yards or so, he craned his head.
