| | In our latest research careers column, Ally Walters calls on the research community to broaden its idea of how postdocs can contribute to cancer research beyond a role as a group leader. The skills and personal qualities possessed by a postdoc are highly desirable within many sectors. Hence, Ally calls for a cultural shift that encourages postdocs to continue to contribute to cancer research beyond academia and encourages cross-sector mobility. Early and open conversations between postdocs and their supervisors are key to career progression. There is breadth of options open to those with a strong research background, but we need to empower postdocs to take that next step. | |
| | | | Are you eager to learn more about translating research in the brain tumour field? Don’t miss the ‘Encourage Translation Lunch’ panel session at the upcoming Brain Tumour Conference in London. Chaired by Tony Hickson (Cancer Research Horizons), this session brings together Petra Hamerlik (AstraZeneca), Steven Pollard (University of Edinburgh) and Juanita Lopez (The Royal Marsden Hospital). They will discuss their experiences, perspectives and views on translating their work – from launch of a spinout company, to working with industry and leading clinical trials. Registration closes on 9 September and there are only a few spaces left. | |

| From scientist to start-up with 3D bioprinting |
| Ishani Malhotra left her job as an industry scientist to start her own company, Carcinotech, to 3D print assay-ready, human-derived tumours for cancer drug discovery and development. She hopes these rapid, ethical and scalable alternatives to animal models will accelerate drug development and get new treatments to patients sooner. Read her story to find out about the challenges and rewards of launching your own biotech company and why Edinburgh is a great place to do it in. “Transitioning from a research-focused role to leading a start-up required a significant shift in mindset,” says Ishani. |

| | | | NHS England is moving to a network of Secure Data Environments (SDEs) that streamline and vastly reduce the current ~7,000 points of data access down to 12. If the new network is properly implemented, with more effective methods of data application and granting processes, researchers should be able to obtain the data needed for their research quicker and more efficiently. The SDE network will consist of two parts: - one large SDE covering the whole of England, containing high level national datasets; - 11 smaller subnational SDEs covering areas like London or the north-east, containing more detailed datasets. Our policy team has analysed the changes and what they mean for cancer research. | |
