On-demand food startups take a hit. Bay Area-based meal delivery service SpoonRocket announced yesterday that it’s shutting down after three years in operation and $13.5M raised from investors including Sherpa Ventures, Base Ventures and Foundation Capital. The former YC company, which had reportedly reached a positive contribution margin, decided to close its doors “due to other costs and the frosty fundraising climate.” That’s not all: Valk Fleet, a new food delivery and logistics startup from European online take-out behemoth Delivery Hero, similarly announced yesterday that it’s closing down as part of a reorganization by its owner. All logistics efforts will be redirected to Berlin-based Foodora, but it’s not yet clear how many of Valk Fleet’s current 200 employees will make the transition.
