I had a conversation last week with someone who commented how grateful they were that they didn’t have to dress the way people did back in the 1840s–60s. After all, with this heat, it must have been boiling! I surprised her by telling her that it might actually have been more comfortable than what we wear now (as confirmed by this professional historical reenactor). Apparently, wearing natural fibers like cotton and linen and covering your skin from direct sunlight can keep you cool during the hot summer months!

With Pioneer Day coming up and all of these excessive heat warnings, it sort of makes me want to sew this dress for the occasion even though it’s well above my skill level. 😅

What does scathing Uvalde school shooting investigation say about police, others’ response?

On Tuesday, the Texas House of Representatives released an investigative report on the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Here are some of the key findings from Lois Collins' article:

Law enforcement failed to adhere to active shooter training. Border control efforts resulted in frequent lockdowns, and it's possible the school's staff did not take the lockdown seriously. Although 376 law enforcement officers responded quickly, no external command center was established, no one took leadership inside the school and responders remained outside of classrooms for 73 minutes as victims were injured, but not dead. Poor internet and cell phone service resulted in some teachers getting the lockdown notice but not others. The school building is 67 years old and does not have some of the safety features newer buildings have. Many of the warning signs the shooter showed were ignored.

The report is a revealing look into the roles law enforcement, the community and the school administration played in this horrible tragedy.

A handshake has deeply symbolic and culturally entrenched meaning spanning millennia ... but what on earth does a fist bump mean? According to Dennis Romboy's reporting, President Joe Biden avoided giving a formal handshake in favor of a fist bump.

There was a great deal of speculation on how the president would greet the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia since he vowed in his 2020 presidential bid to treat the country as a "pariah" for its history of human rights abuses and high-profile murder of journalist and Saudi critic Jamal Khashoggi.
