TO ARREST ABUSE: Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, activists have pointed to an alarming rise in domestic violence cases in New Orleans, coupled with more serious injuries to victims, many of them inured to regular beatings and threats. But over the past three months, things have gotten a lot worse. Thus, city officials are creating a new program aimed at reducing the number of repeat offenders by focusing on rehabilitation rather than punishment. HELP WANTED: More than two years after she became the presumptive nominee for the key post of U.S. attorney in New Orleans, former Judge Keva Landrum has taken her name out of contention. Here are five people who might take her place. STREET VENDORS: Downtown New Orleans has long been known for its nighttime economy, with people trying to eke out a living in lots of unorthodox ways. This year, however, the street vendors flipping burgers and hawking sno-balls have taken the hustle to such heights that law enforcers are citing some violators and chasing off others.
