Bitcoiners Are Flocking To Nostr, But What Makes It Different Than Twitter? By Shinobi Nostr is a decentralized information protocol. The most common use case for Nostr is as an alternative to Twitter that better protects users from censorship. The technology utilizes a public/private key pair to handle identity, and events are structured in a specifically-defined way, including the public key of the creator, a timestamp, type, content payload and signature. It also has tags referencing other events or users, and an ID value which is a hash of everything except the creator's signature. This allows users to post content to one relay server while still being able to view content hosted on other servers. In addition, a major point of Nostr is that even if one relay server begins shuts down or begins to censor, forcing users elsewhere, those users can take their followers with them to a new relay server, a key feature for longevity and true decentralization. |
