| 'A joint effort to structurally remove current obstacles' ‘This is a poignant example of the obstacles that hinder careful and efficient medical scientific research in the Netherlands’, says Gerrit Meijer, Chief Scientific Officer at Health-RI, responding to a recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine. In an international colon cancer study, ‘data from the remaining 9780 participants, all from the Netherlands, could not be included because Statistics Netherlands could not provide follow-up data from the usual-care group owing to a new Dutch law based on the recently introduced European Union General Data Protection Regulation’, the authors of the study wrote. Meijer: 'The Obstacle Removal Trajectory is a joint effort of Health-RI and the Ministries of EZK, OCW and VWS to structurally remove such obstacles.' Read more |

| What can we learn from these international data-sharing projects? During the Health RI 2022 conference, one of the afternoon session had as its topic “international data and sample sharing - in the Netherlands, Europe, and beyond". The session was moderated by Egge van der Poel, data scientist and advocate of large-scale data sharing. Six guest speakers presented international data-sharing projects they are involved in, the obstacles they encounter, as well as their solutions. Read the article: International data sharing. |
| 'Trust and transparency are essential for sharing health data' A learning healthcare system, including the necessary health data infrastructure, cannot be built without the trust, support, and involvement of citizens. Especially patients. But how to involve citizens and patients in the development of data-sharing infrastructures and policymaking? Until the 1st of July, I worked at the Centre for Digital Scholarship at Leiden University where I set up training and services to support researchers from all disciplines in making their data FAIR.' |
