Plus, some religion scholars and journalists are leading a charge to banish a certain religious term from public life.
Good morning. Today’s temperatures: Logan: 42 - 68° 🌦️ | 50% 💧 | ⚠️ Salt Lake City: 50 - 70° 🌦️ | 30% 💧 St. George: 56 - 79° ⛅ ⚠️ Flood Watch On May 10, 1869 the nation was officially tied together by the first transcontinental railroad. This "Wedding of the Rails" was recognized by a ceremony held on Promontory Summit, in Utah territory, about 35 miles west of Brigham City. There the last spike in the long chain of rails was struck and the time it took to cross the country coast to coast was reduced from a few months to just several days. Tell me: When have you seen Utah bring the country together? Also on our mind: The highs and lows of being a twin, the GOP’s path to victory in 2024 and how Utah's lacrosse program earned its first NCAA tournament berth. |
| New poll shows Biden’s disapproval in Utah on the rise |
|
| | Utah voters’ disapproval of President Joe Biden’s job performance has risen slightly, according to a new Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics poll. When asked whether they approved or disapproved of the performance of President Joe Biden, here's what 800 Utah voters had to say: 51% strongly disapprove 14% somewhat disapprove 24% somewhat approve 9% strongly approve 3% don't know With 65% of Utahn's disapproving of Biden's job performance, the president finds himself slightly less popular in the state than he was in December 2022 when 61% said they disapproved of the job he was doing. While these results hardly come as a surprise in a state where former president Donald Trump won with nearly 60% of the vote in 2020, the numbers tell us a more interesting story when broken down by age. Biden’s approval is underwater among all age groups in the state, but the age group Biden enjoys the highest approval from is those ages 25 to 40, at 40%. Biden’s least supportive age group is the youngest: among those ages 18 to 24, only 24% approve of the job he’s doing. |

Twitter? (Deseret News) | What comes to mind when you hear the term "cult"? Probably nothing pleasant. And if you've been on the receiving end of that epithet then you probably know the weighty connotation it carries. The common association between cult and various forms of trauma is a major reason why some religion scholars and journalists, among others, are leading a charge to banish the term from public life. The Associated Press’ latest update to the religion section of its style guide suggests avoiding the label, as does a new religion reporting guide from ReligionLink. ReligionLink notes that describing a group as a “cult” dehumanizes the people involved and increases the likelihood that they’ll face violence from government officials and others seeking to determine what’s really going on in the organization. The guide also says, “Once the label is applied ... it is virtually impossible to shake the association, and it can have extraordinary life or death consequences."
