It's Wednesday, September 28, and today's headlines include an update as Florida prepares for Hurricane Ian to make landfall, a pro-life volunteer who was shot while passing out pamphlets, and the death of Brother Andrew, the founder of Open Doors. | After leaving 11 million people without power in Cuba, Hurricane Ian became a catastrophic Category 4 hurricane early Wednesday with winds up to 155 mph as it moves closer to Port Charlotte and the southwestern coast where it's expected to make landfall by the afternoon and is predicted to cause life-threatening flooding. Millions are bracing for storm surges, catastrophic winds and flooding as the landfall of Ian’s center is expected to occur Wednesday afternoon between the Sarasota, Port Charlotte, Fort Myers and Naples areas, The Weather Channel said. Ian is expected to remain a dangerous Category 4 hurricane through the time of its landfall, per the U.S. National Hurricane Center, which said at 5 a.m., Eastern time, when the hurricane was approximately 75 miles off the coast, that the center of Ian was moving north-northeast toward Naples at about 10mph. | The storm surge is predicted to reach 12 feet if it peaks at high tide in western Florida, and rainfall near the area of landfall could top 18 inches, according to The Associated Press. As Ian moves over the central Florida Peninsula Wednesday night, it might weaken to a tropical storm before possibly emerging over the Atlantic waters by late Thursday and then turn back toward the Georgia or South Carolina coasts as a tropical storm later in the week, it added. The woman, who was handing out pamphlets on behalf of Right to Life of Michigan (RLM) on Sept. 20, was shot in the shoulder after an "alleged verbal altercation" at a home in the area, per police. RLM says the woman was shot "while leaving a residence during a heated conversation" by a man who was not involved in the conversation and that the victim does not know the shooter's identity or motive. RLM's Chris Gast said the woman, a longtime volunteer, is recovering and "in good spirits." Noting that it is important to speak up about key issues and be politically involved, Mitchell cautions against marrying Christianity with partisan politics. "As evangelical Christians, we should prayerfully vote in accordance with our conscience and with who we believe would best serve the interests we hold dear in our faith and convictions ... And we should be absolutely prepared for whoever is elected to let us down because they will. After it's all said and done, we will be reminded yet again, that our only true hope is Jesus." | | Have Millions of American Christians Confused Politics with the Gospel? | Was the relationship between evangelical Christians and Donald Trump a match made in heaven or a marriage made with hell? Did Christian conservatives trade their reputation for a seat at the political table, or is this just a false accusation from the Trump-hating, Christian-bashing, leftist media? And how did Donald Trump go from unlikely presidential candidate to superhero to political savior in the eyes of his supporters? | In this penetrating, carefully documented, no-holds barred book, biblical scholar and cultural commentator Dr. Michael Brown explains how millions of sincere Christians wrapped the gospel in the American flag and got so caught up in partisan politics that President Trump, almost more than Jesus, became the rallying point of their faith. | | New Italian PM vows to protect 'God, family, country' as media tie her to 'fascism' | Italy has elected Giorgia Meloni, its first female prime minister, whose focus on protecting the institution of the family and national identity has caused some media outlets to compare her ideology to "fascism." Meloni, the leader of the Brothers of Italy party, is set to become the next prime minister after her party won 26% of the vote in Sunday's Italian general election. Despite Brothers of Italy's roots dating back to the post-World War II post-fascist Italian Social Movement, mainstream media outlets have tied Meloni and her party to fascism, with conservative political commentator Ann Coulter pointing out that a New York Times article used the word "fascist" or "fascism" 28 times when discussing the possibility of a Meloni victory. Meloni, meanwhile, has lamented what she views as attacks on "national identity," "religious identity," "gender identity" and "family identity." She expressed concern that "I can't define myself as Italian, Christian, woman, mother" but instead must define herself as "citizen x, gender x, parent 1, parent 2," and noted, "I must be a number. Because when I am only a number, when I no longer have an identity or roots, then I will be the perfect slave at the mercy of financial speculators." Read more. |
| | Derwin Gray says God wants 'race of grace,' not 'colorblindness' | During a speech at the Awana Child Discipleship Forum on Friday, Transformation Church Pastor Derwin Gray rejected the idea of "colorblindness" and said churches must focus on the importance of the "race of grace" that all people should belong to. Drawing comparisons from the movie "Encanto" where the family in the film said, "we don't talk about Bruno," Gray explained that churches in the U.S. often say, "we don't talk about race." He lamented that few American Christians actually belong to a "true multiethnic church," saying that "the most divided institution in America is Jesus’ Church ... Not the nightclub, where they be in there dropping it like it’s hot. It looks like every nation, tribe and tongue. But Jesus’ Church doesn’t."
