That’s the dilemma at GEORGETOWN, where a group of students are demanding the school ends its relationship with NIKE because the apparel company doesn’t comply with its Code of Conduct for University Licensees – and is the only vendor not to sign it. The code of conduct sets out clauses for certain working conditions for the vendors that do business with Georgetown and Nike has admitted human rights issues at its factories. But apparel contracts are huge deals in college sports. They provide a tremendous influx of revenue for athletic departments, and with the Nike contract expiring at the end of this month, Georgetown could be in for a large payday. In recent years, MICHIGAN signed a contract to receive more than $10 million a year from Nike and UCLA will get nearly $18 million from ADIDAS. We often hear about how colleges change their standards and morals in pursuit of athletics and its glory. Georgetown’s response will be a high-profile example of whether they are willing to make that tradeoff… LEXIE THOMPSON made her debut on the PGA TOUR – the first time in 13 years a female golfer has joined the men.
