A judge's decision today could delay or move the Derek Chauvin trial. In the wake of the record settlement between Minneapolis and George Floyd's family, the judge overseeing the Chauvin trial is set to rule on defense motions seeking to postpone the trial and move the venue from the current Hennepin County Government Center in downtown Minneapolis. Opening statements are currently scheduled for March 29, and so far a dozen people are seated for a total of 14 jurors needed for the trial. There has been a noticeable rise recently in the count of known, active cases. The latest data shows 9,338 -- marking seven consecutive days with active counts above 8,000, a stretch not seen since late January. While state officials continue to keep close watch on a Carver County outbreak that includes the U.K. strain, they also warned of another outbreak in the eastern end of Minnesota’s Iron Range centered around the town of Aurora. Yesterday, Minnesota saw two big pandemic milestones: 500,000 cases have topped and 2 million shots in arms. Those milestones come after COVID-19 vaccination counts bounced back from the dismal number earlier this week. Officials say the vaccination counts will likely go up in the coming weeks, as they expect 100,000 doses/week of the single-shot J&J vaccine in Minnesota in the coming weeks.
