It snowed. What does that mean for the drought in Utah? |
|
| | You may have noticed ample rainfall in the last month and thought to yourself that the drought must be nearing an end. Unfortunately, that is not the case. While experts are encouraged by the amount of snow and rainfall we've seen thus far, they are also wary about this winter's precipitation outlook. Last winter, we were surprised with heavy snow in November and December, but extremely mild precipitation for the rest of the season. Jordan Clayton, supervisor of the Utah Snow Survey, said, “It is way too early to get hopeful. There is no way to know what is going to happen or not.” Because all of Utah is abnormally dry, virtually every area needs precipitation this winter. Only time will tell how much we'll get. |

| Social Security is at the center of the latest political spar in the Senate race between Republican Sen. Mike Lee and independent challenger Evan McMullin. Days before Election Day on Nov. 8, McMullin attended a virtual press conference with three Utah senior citizens, where he condemned comments that Sen. Lee made more than a decade ago with regard to ending Social Security. “I think Social Security is an important part of the American social fabric,” McMullin said. “It is an absolutely critical system that our seniors have paid into for decades, working long, hard hours to ensure their retirement.” In addition, McMullin recently released an ad featuring a video of Sen. Lee proclaiming his intentions for Social Security at a campaign event during his first run for office in 2010. “It will be my objective to phase out Social Security, to pull it up by the roots and get rid of it,” Lee said. Lee's campaign responded that the ad failed to provide full context of the senator's 2010 statements, including how he immediately followed up on the statement, saying “there’s going to be growing pains associated with doing this. We can’t do it all at once.” Read more about both candidates' stances on Social Security.
