There was a time, not too long ago, when realtors could openly refuse to show black people houses in certain neighborhoods. In Ann Arbor in the 1950s and '60s, that meant black residents mainly were relegated to living in Kerrytown or Water Hill, neighborhoods just north of downtown. Fair housing practices eventually allowed black people the option of moving elsewhere, and the black population in the neighborhoods decreased from 45 percent to 25 percent. Today, much has changed from those in traditionally black areas, much to the lament of former residents.
