Ceremonial shovel scoops of dirt Tuesday signaled the beginning of construction of the new US-Canada bridge. Once completed, the Gordie Howe International Bridge will connect I-75 in Detroit with highway 401 in Windsor, Ontario. Design plans show it will be the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America. During a ceremony in Detroit's Delray neighborhood, Gov. Rick Snyder said the bridge was more than just a connection between counties and the economics of trade, but also "about friendship."
