Native adoption law at center of Supreme Court case used 'every day' in Minnesota. The 1978 law led to protections for Native families in child welfare and adoption cases. It was meant to address the disproportionate number of native children in foster care and historic attempts to erase Native cultures. Opponents say the law can delay getting children into safe homes and is unconstitutional because it give preferential treatment based on race.
