Happy Juneteenth Reader! Today is a day to celebrate freedom and liberation — and above all, truth. As I’ve reported in the past for the Forward, today is not the celebration of enslaved African Americans learning they were free — because they already knew. Instead, today marks the day when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to force the slaveholders at gunpoint to abide by liberation. The truth of this day matters, and has wide-ranging implications for reckoning with racism in America. As attacks increase on Black people, Jewish people, and those of us who are both, we need brave journalism that brings truth to the foundational myths of our country as well as our present moment.
That’s the work of the Forward, which I’m asking you to support today. |
The Jewish values of courage and integrity guide every aspect of our journalism at the Forward. Those same values direct our coverage of race in America and within Jewish communities with the nuance and expertise you trust and deserve. We need your support to keep it going. In honor of Juneteenth — and in honor of telling the truth about our history, culture and country — make your gift to the Forward today.
