| Editor's Picks Every resident has stress, but today’s residents may have more than those of past generations. The new pressures include financial obligations and an uncertain future. This stress can cause residents to lose their passion for medicine, become cynical about the healthcare system, and become less humanistic. As COVID-19 spreads throughout the U.S., healthcare organizations face unique challenges to support their workers and keep patients safe. Kentucky has the highest average salary for physicians in the country at $346,000, according to Medscape’s 10th Annual Physician Compensation Report. More than 17,000 physicians from more than 30 specialties Medscape’s submitted survey responses, which were used to compile the report. Sleep deprivation and fatigue has long been a concern of the GME community. To address these issues, in 2003 the ACGME Common Program Requirements capped the number of hours residents may work in a week, and subsequent revisions have addressed residents’ maximum shift lengths. Further, Common Program Requirement VI.D. specifically addresses fatigue and the program’s role in educating residents and faculty to recognize the signs of fatigue and sleep deprivation.
