The Art of Praying in Public | | I remember being at a church dinner where I was called upon to bless the meal. I wasn’t ready. There were about 100 people present and I froze. Halfway through my prayer I paused for an uncomfortably long time—then started rambling. I prayed for the weather, the economy, hurting children—everything except what I had been asked to pray for: the food. I can chuckle at the memory now (it was a while ago) but it taught me an important lesson. Public prayer is tricky. You’re petitioning God, not only for yourself, but on behalf of others too.
