LONDON (NYT NEWS SERVICE).- The Bank of England has stopped displaying art depicting several former governors and directors after a review found they were connected to the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Oil paintings and busts of seven leading figures at the central bank between 1698 and 1814 James Bateman, Robert Bristow, Robert Clayton, William Dawsonne, Gilbert Heathcote, William Manning and John Pearse have been removed after it was established they had links to slavery, the bank said in a statement Friday. The move was the latest in a difficult reckoning taking place at museums, galleries and long-standing institutions in Britain and other European countries that have begun reframing their exhibitions to more explicitly acknowledge links to slavery and colonialism. SAINT PETERSBURG (AFP).- Russia's Hermitage Museum, the largest art collection in the world, announced Tuesday it will sell several masterpieces, including a work of Leonardo da Vinci, in the form of non-fungible tokens (NFT). The Saint Petersburg-based museum in partnership with the Binance NFT marketplace will run the auction starting Tuesday and until September 7, the Hermitage said in a statement. An NFT is a digital object with a certificate of authenticity created by blockchain technology that underlies cryptocurrency. It cannot be forged or otherwise manipulated. In recent years, NFTs have been sought after by art collectors, with some selling for millions of dollars. The Hermitage will bring out a limited series of NFTs, including a digital copy of Leonardo da Vinci's "Madonna Litta", as well as works by Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet and Wassily Kandinsky. As an homage to one of the most influential German artists of his generation, the exhibition focuses on his early works including his iconic film Origin of the Night (Amazon Cosmos), a selection of photographs, a slide projection, as well as several sculptural installations. His famous floor piece America Señores Naturales, originally created for the German Pavilion at the 41st Venice Biennale in 1984, and for which he was awarded the Golden Lion prize, will be shown on the ground floor of the gallery. NEW YORK, NY.- David Richard Gallery is presenting Altered Landscapes by Michael Namingha, a Native American artist of the Tewa-Hopi tribes from Northern New Mexico in his first solo exhibition with the gallery. The presentation includes seven new photography-based artworks that address climate change and the resulting manmade alterations to the landscape using images from two specific locations in New Mexico and a novel process for printing and presenting the images. The images are manipulated and segmented into blocky structures with bisecting and overlapping planes of varying color values. The resulting digital chromogenic prints are mounted with the face of the image to the backside of shaped and strategically angled Plexiglas that relates directly to the blocky internal shapes. Shine arrives at The Warhol from the University of Pennsylvania where he is a doctoral candidate in history of art. He was also a graduate teaching fellow at the same university over the last two years. Shine assumed his role at The Warhol on August 30, 2021. SALZBURG.- Traps are defining elements in the art of Andreas Slominski, both in a figurative and a literal sense. His new works include a series of motifs drawn from historical greeting and playing cards, which the artist edits, enlarges and transfers to poster sheets produced by the German company Begeisternder Wahlkampf (Captivating Campaign). Originally intended for exaggerated or even lurid political messages, the election poster is repurposed using sentimental images that invite the viewer to discover hidden poetry in the mundane. 'Talking movies': The Chinese cinema bringing film to blind audiences
BEIJING (AFP).- Every Saturday, Zhang Xinsheng travels two hours for a movie date with friends, navigating Beijing's confusing subway system with his white cane and a speaking map that screams directions on his mobile phone. Zhang lost his sight in his early twenties due to a degenerative condition, but since going blind has discovered a love for cinema at the "talking film" club, where volunteers give vivid narrations to an auditorium of blind or partially sighted cinemagoers. "After I listened to a film for the first time in 2014, it felt like a (new) world had opened up for me," he said. "I felt I could understand the film despite my blindness. SAN FRANCISCO (AFP).- Apple on Monday announced it is buying classical music streaming service Primephonic and will launch an app dedicated to the genre. Apple did not disclose how much it paid for Europe-based Primephonic, which confirmed that it is becoming part of the iPhone-maker's music service. "We felt compelled to develop a streaming service that truly gets classical right -- so thats what we did over the last three years," the Primephonic team said in the post. "But to fully achieve the next phase of our mission, we need to bring our classical streaming expertise to millions of listeners worldwide." He was 83. A friend and collaborator, Dave Pomeroy, said the cause was COVID-19. In fact, she vividly remembers the story of a woman who was killed in those days by someone who climbed through her bathroom mirror.
