In honor of Juneteenth, our curatorial fellows have selected works of art by Black artists and others engaging histories of enslavement, emancipation, and inequality in the United States. The article below is the first of a three-part series placing works from the Age of Emancipation in dialogue with the ongoing fight for racial justice today. We’d also like to share with you some resources and stories dedicated to social justice. This week on Harvard Art Museums from Home: Curatorial fellows share works from the Harvard Art Museums collections in honor of Juneteenth, America’s second Independence Day. Curator Sarah Kianovsky takes a closer look at the sculpture Doorway on Wheels by David Smith. In these times of limited travel, check out these works of art that take our imagination to faraway places. Live events this week include our online Ho Family Student Guide Tours covering themes of nostalgia and longing and the global exchange of gold. Our friends at the Harvard Museums of Science and Culture are hosting a virtual Summer Solstice Celebration on Saturday, June 20. |
