Back to school is stressful for many kids and their families. But aside from worrying about class loads and friend groups, students at Cleveland Metropolitan School District are concerned about gun violence. Three students were killed by gunfire outside Cleveland high schools last year. “Going to school, you should not be thinking of your own mortality as often as you’re thinking about algebra,” said one 16-year-old class president. The Cleveland school district identified four “priority high schools” to focus on increasing school safety: John Adams, John F. Kennedy, Garret Morgan and John Marshall. It’s also working with the city and Greater Cleveland RTA to align bus schedules with dismissal times and allow students to stay in after-school programs until buses arrive. Still, violence can occur anywhere: nearby stores, restaurants, RTA train stations and parks. Here’s to a safer school year. – Laura |
