Last week, I attended Yiddish-vokh, the week-long retreat in the Berkshires for Yiddish speakers of all ages. I look forward to this in-person celebration of Yiddish every year — in fact, I’ve been going longer than any other participant, since the 1970s! It did not disappoint. I love being immersed in the Yiddish-speaking community, and I especially enjoy seeing the many kinder (children) there playing with (and occasionally yelling at) each other — part of the coming generation of fluent Yiddish speakers. They’re one of the reasons why I continue to create daily Yiddish content for the Forverts, nurturing a rich community of Yiddish speakers that they can join. |
Donate today to the Forverts and support more than just the news. Together, we’re helping keep the Yiddish language alive and culturally relevant, inspiring and innovative. Whether you enjoy our Yiddish Wordle game (Vertl), our Yiddish Word of the Day YouTube series, our cooking shows or our Yiddish Brief newsletter, the Forverts is the only online publication bringing Yiddish to life for this generation — and the next! Our Yiddishkeit content is powered by the generosity of our donors. Help us keep Yiddish on the front page for the next generation: Make your gift today. |
